Over the past 2 weeks, over 150 young people from around Wales have taken part in one of our residential summer schools; Confident Futures, Discovery, or Step Up Plus. These are some of our biggest events of the year and both extremely useful and great fun for anyone who attends.
The summer schools are a huge insight into life as a university student and cover all aspects of university (not just the studying). Academic taster sessions included extracting your own DNA in Biosciences, learning a completely new language pattern in Japanese, and stopping a zombie apocalypse in Maths.
Aside from the academic part, everyone had a budget for the week to cover 4 meals in total and something to do during an evening in Cardiff Bay. Budgeting is a key skill that you learn as a student, especially with loans/grants needing to cover rent, food, drink and any other social/sport activities and shopping that you might want to spend your money on. Needless to say, everyone managed to make it through the week without running out of money!
We also had a load of other activities to showcase the wide variety of societies & sports available, from rounders in the park, making your own music, and team building circus skills, to ultimate frisbee, a boat trip to the bay, and designing a completely new student society.
One of the biggest challenges for some people was the ‘Come dine with us’ evening. The simple task of deciding what to eat for dinner turned into an enormous decision, let alone trying to cook one large meal together as a flat. My flat opted for an easy meal of ready-made pizzas and garlic bread (though some people still need to learn how to use an oven!). Some flats made some incredible feasts; the highlights being cheesy chicken enchiladas, vegetable stir-fry and home-baked cookies.
It’s been a fantastic, if not tiring, couple of weeks and we hope everyone who came along had an amazing time and is now excited for applying to university! Even if you have no idea what you want to study or where to study it, events like these can lead you to new ideas and help you make your mind up.
