It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….

Posted by Kate Powell

It’s finally December, my favourite month of the year – I love that people are so unexplainably happy at Christmas and the decorations are finally up! There are so many things going on this month you can’t help but get into the spirit of things. Apart from the fact that I still have lectures, Christmas time at University is amazing. Here’s a few things I am getting up to in the run up to Christmas…

Brass Band Concert and Carol Service

One of my friends plays the tenor horn in the university brass band, and on Sunday, I went to her Christmas concert. There’s something about a brass band at Christmas which is incredibly festive, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. The band opened the concert with ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ and it left me with goose-bumps – being Welsh I love listening to the national anthem! The Cardiff University Black Verse choir sang during the second half of the concert, and the finale involved a lovely rendition of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ by both the band and choir. The concert was a really fun way to get into the festive spirit!

In the evening, I went with some friends to the local church for the Jazz Carol Service. This is something I look forward to each year at Christmas! It is a friendly light hearted Christmas service and the church welcomes everyone who wants to attend. Christian or not, it’s a lovely opportunity to think back to the reason we have Christmas and sing carols with a Jazzy twist by the band.

Christmas Social Meals

The end of first term comes with society Christmas meals. I particularly like Christmas meals as they are a chance to spend time with friends you have made in societies outside of your normal meetings/events – and plus who doesn’t like an excuse for a three course meal. I enjoy the karate Christmas social as it is great to see everyone outside of training sessions and dressed in Christmas jumpers rather than white Gi’s. Our Christmas meal this year was in a pub at the end of Crwys Road and the food was amazing – a particular shout out to the raspberry cheesecake….yuuuum!

MedSoc Christmas Ball

Another ball and another excuse to by a dress (not that I need much of an excuse) – the Medics Christmas ball. Similar to the Christmas socials this is another fantastic part of uni where you get to see your course mates out of lectures all dressed for a fun night of dancing and socialising.
The ball kicked off with a Jazz band and smiling for so many photos my jaw was aching and ended with aching legs from dancing – who needs to go to the gym when you can dance all those Christmas cakes away!
