The evolution of the Earth and the life it supports is one of civilisation’s big questions. This is why geologists are much sought after in many professions, because of their global view of natural processes. Geologists act as scientific detectives who try to reveal the past and the future of the Earth; they examine how plate tectonics control events such as earthquakes and volcanoes, and look for ways in which we can manage our natural resources more sustainably.
Geology provides you with an overview of the physical, geochemical and biological processes that formed planet Earth, its oceans, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. Geologists observe the history within visible rocks and interpret the processes controlling Earth’s structure and environments.

What will I learn?
Students will learn to read rocks, and be able to reconstruct environments from the distant past, and therefore be equipped to understand Earth processes today.
You will cover a wide choice of core subjects from fossils to sediments, volcanoes to plate tectonics, as well as geophysics, geological mapping, and more applied options such as water resources, engineering geology and global change.
Fieldwork is also an important part of the course and you will be given the opportunity to take part in field visits to Cornwall, Northern Spain and Cyprus. Another aspect of the course is a five-week mapping project, where you can go to areas such as Corsica, the South of France and the Spanish Pyrenees, as well as many UK locations.
Graduates typically follow careers in Geology and are employed as geologists in different fields such as: engineering, exploration, reservoir, survey, consultancy and oil. Past students have been employed by organisations such as the British Geological Survey, the Environment Agency, Digirock and Hummingbird Resources.
What determines the nature of the surface of the Earth, both physically and biologically, temporally and spatially, and how has mankind impacted upon it? This is the sort of question that Environmental Geoscientists are trained to answer.

What will I learn?
Students will learn how planet Earth works, how natural events have and are affecting the environment, how humans are influencing the Earth system and how environmental trends may be changed.
You will develop your knowledge and understanding regarding the global climate system, its history and future developments, and about the effects of pollution and how these may be monitored and controlled. You will also go on an environmental field course and undertake a project which will include practical aspects such as mapping.
Graduates have found employment as environmental advisors, software analysts and surveyors in the water industry, local authorities and organisations such as the Environment Agency.
Exploration and Resource Geology
Globally, there is an ever increasing need for oil, gas, metals, and construction materials in a world where resources are finite. Exploration geologists have a solid grounding in geology and focus on the applied understanding of exploration of the Earth’s natural resources. Consequently, exploration geologists have never been in greater demand.
If you have a scientific background and want to contribute towards creating a sustainable future then Exploration and Resource Geology could be for you!
What will I learn?
Students will gain an understanding of geological processes within the Earth that lead to the formation of natural resources. You will be provided with training in the technological techniques and specialist skills required within the modern geological exploration industry.
You are encouraged to undertake an industrial placement with an exploration company, or you can complete an exploration and geological mapping project. As part of the course, you will go on an overseas field course, learn about mineral and hydrocarbon resources and learn to design a professional exploration project.
Graduates of the Exploration and Resource Geology course have followed careers ranging from field-based mineral or petroleum geologists in remote parts of the world, to an office-based career analysing raw geological date using computer based techniques.
