History

The study of History is essential to the intellectual life of any society. It is the discovery, collection, organisation and presentation of information from past events. As a subject, it paints the picture of why we are here, how we got here and helps us to understand human behaviour. Each society and culture has a fascinating story of how it came to be. Historians need to appreciate so many factors that influence our history, including wars, health, religion, and so much more.

If you want to be part of a team that helps dig up our past, preserves our history as a species and appreciates the story of nations and cultures, then history could be for you!

What will I learn?

History students will gain a broad appreciation of major events that shape our history and the skills and techniques that were used to discover them. You will learn when and how to use primary and secondary sources, the conventions of historical writing, and gain a wide range of transferable skills.

As you progress, you can choose the area of history that you wish to study more about in-depth. This can include different countries’ history, different eras of history and advanced techniques used in the study of history.

As well as the course in Ancient History, Cardiff University also offers courses in Medieval History and History with Welsh History, should you wish to specialise in another time period or combine two of the courses.

Careers

The broad knowledge and skills acquired during a history degree makes graduates employable in a range of careers.Destinations of graduates include local government, universities, museums and the Department for Education. Career options include historian, teachers, care of collections officer and many more.

Ancient History

Ancient History focuses on developing an understanding of the societies of the Greek and Roman worlds and their immediate neighbours in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Near East.

In order to fully appreciate the modern world, you need to be aware of where we came from and in which ways civilisation has evolved. If you want to gain a better understanding of humanity and are interested in the past, then Ancient History could be for you!

What will I learn?

Students will learn about the political, social and cultural history of a variety of different states, how to construct evidence-based arguments, and understand modern debates on a variety of historical issues. You will study both written sources in translation and the archaeological record. There is also the option to learn Greek and Latin in order to read and translate original source texts yourself.

Careers

The broad knowledge and skills acquired during an ancient history degree makes graduates employable in a range of careers. Recent graduates have gone on to careers in business, the Civil Service, local government and journalism.
