Food, Nutrition and Dietetics are dynamic and exciting career areas. With an emphasis on health and fitness, there are lots of new markets developing to help people live healthy lives.

There are many different courses in this field, ranging from a focus on food science and helping to produce new, affordable products, to dietetics and working with the community to promote healthier lifestyles.

What will I study?

Through this subject you will study the basics of food, and human diets, including the essential requirements and the different components of foods in diets.

Within food science, students are provided with information on how to produce foods, how to test foods and how to ensure quality control. Dietetic students learn how to translate their theoretical knowledge into the clinical setting and are given the opportunity to undertakework experience in the two fields to help ease the transition into the working world.


There are a range of career destinations for graduates. Within Food Science, graduates can work in food manufacturing companies in roles such as quality control, management and food development.

Dieticians are eligible to work within the NHS to advise people on their diets and to help ensure that people are achieving the quality of diet to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Food Production Management

The food industry is crucial to every single country in the world’s health and prosperity. There are many intermediaries between the primary food producers and the consumers including manufacturers, suppliers, marketers and retailers. These must all work together whilst ensuring that food safety and quality is high and with public health in mind.

If you want to work in a fast-paced industry, using knowledge of food and business then Food Production Management could be for you!

What will I learn?

Students will examine the industry using modern management theories and practices. You will learn about the new technologies and developments within the industry and the law surrounding it whilst developing innovative ideas for the sustainable future of the food industry. You will also gain a deeper understanding of business and develop your skills and knowledge of procedures and practices to help grow the food industry.


Many graduates of the Food Production Management course go on to achieve management status in the food manufacturing industry. Some graduates have gained management positions in other industries such as retail and hospitality.

Food Science and Technology

The food industry has the largest and most important economic activity in the world. The health and welfare of people everywhere depends on good agricultural yields, reliable storage, successful processing and safe handling of all types of food. Consequently, there is a demand for well-qualified food scientists and technologists who have an in-depth understanding of the food supply system.

Food Science is the application of theoretical knowledge to produce foods. A food scientist will work with food companies to help produce new products that are also affordable to produce – thus an element of business knowledge will also be needed. Food Technology, is the application of Food Science to the processing of food materials into safe, nutritious and tasty food products.

If you are interested in research, development and analysis of food and helping to sustain the planet then Food Science and Technology could be for you!

What will I learn?

Within Food Science, students are provided with information on how to produce foods, how to test foods and how to ensure quality control. You will gain an understanding of food microbiology, raw material technology, food chemistry, human nutrition and biochemistry and apply this knowledge directly to the processes involved with food manufacture.

You will also develop skills in the areas of food safety, auditing and risk assessment, and draw upon the application of other technologies to food, such as packaging, engineering and agriculture.


Most graduates go into the food industry in areas such as food microbiology, food analysis, research and development.

Human Nutrition and Dietetics

Human Nutrition and Dietetics covers the scientific basis of human health and how to manage disease through diet. The course draws on a range of topics such as physiology, biochemistry, food science and sociology to provide an in-depth understanding of nutrition and metabolism.

Dieticians develop activities aimed at the feeding and nutrition of people in diverse physical and mental situations. They protect and promote health, prevention of illness and when necessary, deliver dietetic-nutritional treatment.

If you want to be part of the health community, want to help people, and have a keen interest in Biology and Chemistry then Human Nutrition and Dietetics could be for you!

What will I learn?

Students will gain a broad understanding of Human Nutrition and Dietetics through placements and lecture-led learning. This includes taking modules in Biochemistry, Physiology, Food Studies and Health Psychology. You will also learn about public health nutrition, the principles of dietetics and the current issues surrounding nutrition and dietetics.

You will undertake placements in a professional NHS setting and use case studies and kitchen practicals to develop a professional understanding of the role.


Dieticians will usually begin their careers in the NHS, where they progress to the main clinical grades and specialise in various aspects of dietetics. Graduates have gone on to work for the NHS, in health promotion, education, research and journalism.

Public Health Nutrition

Public Health Nutrition examines the application of food and nutrition knowledge, policy, and research to the improvement of the health of populations. Public health nutritionists explore what social, behavioural, food and nutrition related factors affect health, how to improve the nutritional status of the population and how nutrition and food related public policies affect health.

Public health nutritionists work in health improvement with groups and communities to promote health, well-being and reduce inequalities. You may be working with low-income groups, pregnant women or in communities requiring specific health interventions related to nutrition. You could be working to help your local community or across the world, providing emergency relief for low-income countries.

If you want to help different communities and have an interest in nutrition and living healthily then Public Health Nutrition could be for you!

What will I learn?

Students will learn the skills necessary to become nutritionists, as recommended by the Association for Nutrition. You will gain an in-depth understanding of Dietetics, Food Science and Nutrition, which will draw upon Biochemistry, Physiology, Sociology and Psychology. You will learn about the state of nutrition in the UK and abroad, what issues different communities are facing and how to combat these.

You also have the option to undertake a work placement to develop your skills in a professional environment such as a sports facility, school or supermarket.


Typically, graduates work as public health nutritionists and deliver nutrition interventions in public health teams and for local councils. Others have used their skills of nutritional analysis to improve the provision of school meals. Graduates have been employed within NHS Trusts, government departments, charities and the food industry.

Sport Biomedicine and Nutrition

Sport Biomedicine and Nutrition focuses on the scientific study of all aspects of lifestyle and approaches to improving health. This includes looking at the role of exercise, health promotion and nutrition in sports communities.

Students will be equipped with the skills to improve health, fitness and performance by using their knowledge to understand and predict how the body responds and adapts to exercise. Sports nutritionists consider the impact that lifestyle has on health and suggest appropriate changes in exercise and diet to help prevent disease.

What will I learn?

Students will understand the interactions between our bodies, minds and the environment in which we live. You will study science-based modules such as human physiology, nutrition, biochemistry and psychology, all with a focus on sport and exercise.

There is also the opportunity for you to take a Professional Training Year and develop your skills in a real-life working environment, in between your studies.


Graduates have gone on to careers within the Sport and Leisure industry, NHS, National Sports Councils and Sporting National Governing Bodies. Others have also been employed in the pharmaceutical and food industries or carried on with further study.
