Religion has been part of human experience from the earliest traces of human existence, up to the present day. It has been the way in which most cultures have sought to express their understanding of the purpose of life and the foundation of personal and social behaviour. Consequently, the study of religion is rich and exciting, inviting students to explore their own and others’ religious history and culture, and some of the fundamental questions of existence.

There are many areas to consider with regard to religion, including how certain religions are run, what their beliefs are based on, and how they practise their religion. Religious Studies encompasses all these and other topics such as social views, how religion approaches different parts of human nature, and more.

If you are interested in religion and want to understand it in more depth, then Religious Studies may be for you!

What will I study?

Students will cover the broad concepts of what religions are, and the different types of religious organisations. You then have the flexibility to create your own degree based on your personal interests. You will develop the skills involved in critically exploring and assessing issues of faith, religion, culture and society within a challenging academic environment. You will encounter an extensive range of academic perspectives and skills such as linguistic and textual analysis, historical methods and philosophical argument.

There is also the option to study texts in their original languages and so students can opt to learn Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Arabic, Latin, Sanskrit and Pali.


Career options for graduates include teaching at primary, secondary and university level. Other graduates go on to work in religious ministries and are employed by religious establishments.

The analytical skills acquired along with other skills gained during a degree in Religious Studies ensures that graduates are employable in a range of careers. Recent graduates have gone on to careers in business, the Civil Service, local government and journalism.
